Today we are going to tackle the laundry…well, the laundry detergent at least. I’ll leave the actual laundry up to you. What is a good price for laundry detergent and what are some of the factors to consider when stocking up?
I used the Item Search feature here on Southern Savers to research all the past sales on detergent for us. You might be like me and love to have an idea in your head of the lowest price an item goes for and the item search is an awesome tool for that!
Laundry detergent can get a little tricky with the number of loads vs the number of ounces, high efficiency detergents and different concentrations so let’s break it down.
There are three main types out there:
Laundry Gel Pacs
The gel pacs or single use packages have become really popular lately. They eliminate the need for measuring out liquid and the pacs contain a very concentrated formula so they are pretty small. As you can imagine, you will pay a little more for the convenience factor.
Liquid Laundry Detergent
You can’t judge liquid detergents based on the size of the bottle. You may notice “2x “or “3x” on the labels. These just mean that their formula is twice or three times as concentrated as the regular stuff. So if you buy 2x detergent you’ll need half as much per load as you would with plain old detergent. The bottle will be smaller, but you’ll notice that it is the same price as the larger non-concentrated version.
Powder Laundry Detergent
Powder laundry detergent is pretty straightforward, you just scoop it out and add it to your laundry. Normally keeping an eye on the anticipated number of loads is the most helpful rather than the weight going by box weight.
Luckily, most of the time we will see laundry detergent measured by the number of loads. So keeping that and the concentrations in mind, the easiest way to compare the prices of detergent is to compare the price per load. To do that, just divide the price after coupons and discounts by the number of expected loads.
In my house we are fans of the liquid and gel pacs and usually stick All or Tide brands, but y’all know I’ll use the other stuff if I can find a great deal on it! To get an idea of the best prices out there, I plugged in “laundry detergent” to the item search feature and all of the results are in the list below. I put a next to the top deals based on the per load price. In general if you can get below 10¢ a load you are doing good.
If you prefer a certain brand, you can even type in Tide Laundry Detergent” or “All Laundry Detergent” in the search so that you’re only looking deals or past sales on your favorite brands.
