Every item has a sale period, so knowing when you should buy is key to saving a chunk of money! If you are wanting a big ticket item, here are both the worst things and the best things to buy in January. If you’re wondering about other things to buy in January, see the January grocery store trends.
The Best Things to Buy in January
Televisions
You can beat Black Friday pricing with January TV sales!! We see big TV deals starting 2 weeks before the Super Bowl. The super Bowl is February 12th, so don’t wait past that. The bigger the TV the better the deal for these sales!
Cruise Travel
January and February are called “wave months” for cruises. They run some of their largest sales of the year with many of the best discounts being ships that are sailing before summer starts. This could make for a wonderful spring break! You may be able to find offers such as kids sail free or deals of up to 75% off the second passenger.
Fitness Equipment
January is always the best month to buy anything fitness related, big or small. If you want new workout clothes or a new treadmill, you’ll find sales all over town and online.
Tip: If you can’t afford it now, June is the best month to buy large used equipment, as people realize they never used it and put it up for sale on local sites and Facebook marketplace.
Linens & Towels
Outside of holiday sales, January is the month to grab any new sheets and towels you need. We see discounts up to 80% off these home goods from most home goods stores.
Organization & Storage
Everyone wants to get organized in the new year. Because of those resolutions, we see the lowest prices of the year on all things organization during January. Grab large storage bins, new garage shelving, and even big closet organizers all at their lowest prices!
The Worst Things to Buy in January
Electronics
Other than TVs, stay away from any other electronics purchases this month! Smartphones, computers, video game consoles, etc.—this is one of the worst months for electronic discounts. If you can, wait until the summer for computers and wait for the fall for a new phone or gaming unit.
Toys
While we are seeing good clearance sales on toys at Target, Walgreens & Best Buy, you want to hold off any toy purchases that aren’t on clearance! If you have birthdays coming up, try to find what you can in the clearance sales.
Furniture & Mattresses
Coming off big holiday sales, January is very quiet with very few markdowns or sales on furniture or mattresses. The best trick for these items is to wait for patriotic three-day weekends. That means trying to wait until Memorial Day weekend if you can.
Summer Clothing
Stores are already setting out bathing suits and shorts. Stay far away from them! They will not run any decent sales for a couple more months, so window shop, but don’t buy until late March.
