With Thanksgiving just around the corner, now is the time to start figuring out ways to save on Thanksgiving dinner.  Starting early will help you save a chunk of money and take some stress away too!

How to Save on Thanksgiving Dinner | 8 Frugal Tips

Make Your Menu Now

Start planning now.  Decide what’s on the menu, about how many people you expect and any new traditions you want to add.  While it is a few weeks away, this will help you start early in figuring out all the ingredients you need.  Don’t just think about food, but also add in any paper goods, and things to get the house ready too!

Delegate

Once the menu is made, it’s time to see if any guests would be up for helping to cook.  Most folks love to bring something, so either ask them to make something on your menu or see if they want something you didn’t think of. By breaking up the cooking list you are also decreasing your out-of-pocket expense! If you have family members who don’t like to cook, how about asking them to bring the paper goods or drinks. According to advice experts like Dear Abby, it’s considered rude to not ask for help and try to cook it all yourself!

Go Traditional and Save

Thanksgiving isn’t the day to pull out gourmet recipes.  Not only will sticking with the traditional recipes save you money, it will also help you stay in good graces with your family.  You may have always wanted to try some fancy version of sweet potatoes, but everyone else around the table just wants sweet potato casserole the way mama always made it.  The benefit for your budget is that traditional recipes tend to use fewer ingredients, plus they all call for things you would have on hand rather than buying lots of extra things you’ll never use in another meal again.

Shop Canned and Dry Goods Early

Many of the main staple ingredients we need are already on sale.  Don’t wait to grab them, but go ahead and stock up. Not only do you beat the rush, but it also gives you extra time to remember things you forgot and possibly to start cooking early!

                  chicken bone broth
If you’re feeling that tinge of soreness in your throat, do something to soothe it: make some homemade bone broth.

The difference in making regular broth and making bone broth is the cooking time. Broth or stock is cooked for a couple of hours (and is still super tasty in recipes), but bone broth is simmered for a lot longer, which allows the collagen and nutrients from the bones to extract.

These nutrients can help support gut health, inflammatory issues, and even skin problems. And, yep, it’s great for making a good, old-fashioned pot of chicken soup for a cold.

Tip: I use a leftover rotisserie chicken carcass when I make this (yet another reason why rotisserie chickens are so good!). We’ll use the meat in a dinner recipe and then use the carcass for this bone broth.

                  Homemade Chicken Bone Broth

                  Ingredients

                  • 1 rotisserie chicken carcass
                  • 5-6 carrots, scrubbed and chopped into pieces
                  • 1 onion, washed and cut into chunks (you can leave the skin on)
                  • 5 stalks of celery, washed and chopped into pieces
                  • 2 tbsp whole peppercorns
                  • salt to taste (I used about 1 tbsp)
                  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
                  • 1 tsp dried thyme
                  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
                  • cold water

                  Directions

                  1. In a large dutch oven, add the chicken, vegetables, and spices.
                  2. Add enough cold water to fully cover all of the ingredients. Set the pot over medium heat and bring to a boil.
                  3. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer on low (just a few small bubbles on the surface) for 15 hours.
                  4. Check the broth periodically and add more liquid if it's getting low (the ingredients should stay submerged).
                  5. Once the broth is done cooking (it will be a deep caramel color), remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.
                  6. Set a sieve on top of a large bowl and spoon the contents of the pot through the sieve into the bowl. I usually strain mine three times. Discard the solids.
                  7. Store the broth in airtight containers in the fridge. You can also let it cool slightly, add to freezer bags, and freeze flat in the freezer.
                  8. Use it to make soups, rice, and lots more. You can also simply drink it (some people drink about 2 cups per day for health benefits).
