Have you ever seen recipes call for brown butter? Brown butter takes the flavor in recipes to a new level, but it’s actually super simple to make.
You’re basically cooking butter until the milk solids caramelize, creating a super rich, nutty, and caramel-y butter that’s great for desserts and more.
How To Do It:
-Melt your butter in a small saucepan over medium-high heat (how much butter depends on your recipe). When the butter just starts to boil, reduce the heat to medium and simmer until it’s foamy (make sure to stir pretty frequently).
-Continue to cook, while you stir and scrape the bottom of the pan, until the foam subsides and the butter has turned a deep golden color (there will be little specks of brown in there, too).
-This process takes about 5 minutes for me, but it will depend on your stove and type of butter. You really have to keep your eye on it so it doesn’t burn (which is not pleasant).
-Immediately remove from the heat and pour into a heatproof bowl.
Note: A lot of recipes require that your butter cool (or re-solidify) before using. You can just put it in the fridge for an hour or so until it firms back up. You’ll usually be looking for the consistency of room temperature butter (so not liquid and not cold).
