Getting your kids in the kitchen with you while you cook can be a rewarding experience for both parties. It makes for great quality time, but it can also give your kids some ownership of the meal and, perhaps, make it easier to eat the foods they may not welcome otherwise. Regardless of the ages of your kids, there are ways they can be involved.
- Talk to your kids about healthy ingredients as you cook. They can experience them first-hand and will make it easier for them to try new things.
- Enlist younger kiddos to wash veggies, carry items, or put things in the trash. Older kids can pour and mix ingredients, set the table, or use a hand mixer.
- Give them boundaries. For example, teach them not to use the knives or get near the stove without supervision or assistance.
- Set aside a little extra time when you’re preparing meals with your kids. It may require a little more patience when spills and messes occur.
Of course, not every recipe is going to be easy for a child to help with, especially if they’re knew to kitchen tasks.
