I’m all for saving money and making healthier choices, but I will confess that I have my limits. Toothpaste is one of them, but I have a friend that raves about her homemade toothpaste, so I thought I would share it in case anyone else was interested.
This is a great way to have organic toothpaste without the expensive organic label in the grocery store. All you need are two ingredients and you’re set. She does add in two optional ingredients for flavor, but they aren’t making your teeth any cleaner.
If you shop at the drugstores then you are already getting free toothpaste, but again that’s never the organic, fluoride free options… If you want a natural toothpaste without spending a lot of money than this recipe is for you!
Homemade Toothpaste:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
3/4 cup baking soda
10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil (optional)
2-3 drops of liquid stevia extract (optional, for a sweeter taste)
Directions:
Melt coconut oil in a sauce pan.
Mix in baking soda (add other optional ingredients at this time)
Pour into an 8 oz mason jar
To use: with a spoon add a small amount to toothbrush and brush away!
Total price is approx. $1.33 for 8 oz (not including optional ingredients)
Bonus: baking soda is a natural teeth whitener! This is completely chemical free, even more so than most of the expensive “natural” toothpaste on the market. Plus, if you want to avoid fluoride this is fluoride free too.
Note: This toothpaste will be harder in cooler temperatures and softer in warmer temperatures. This is because coconut oil turns to liquid above 75 degrees F.
