Sweet recipes are one of the highlights of summer—think banana cream pie and watermelon—but savory summer recipes have their place, too. Here’s a short list of some of my favorite savory summer recipe ideas with flavors from around the world!

Note: The prices given are an average of the best price you can get across many different grocery stores. Items may be more or less expensive in your area.

Savory Summer Recipe Ideas

Asian Cabbage Mango Slaw

Mango, $1
Cabbage, 50¢ lb
Baby Carrots, 1 lb, $1.50
Soy Sauce, 49¢

We just got all the main ingredients for Mango Slaw in our produce co-op basket this week.  My crew loves seeing mangos because they know this slaw will be on the menu!

Shrimp Salsa

Shrimp EZ Peel, 31-40 ct., $5.97
Tomatoes, $1.29 lb

We are seeing a number of shrimp deals this week.  You don’t have to get fancy or even make a hot meal out of shrimp.  This is an easy “salsa” that would be a fun addition to a finger foods night (my plan is “tailgating fare” for the official start of ACC next weekend).

Strawberry-Almond Salad with Basil-Balsamic Vinaigrette

Strawberries, 16 oz, $2.50 ea.
Olive Oil, 32 oz, $4.49
Salad Mix, $2
Almonds 3.5 oz, $1

I’ve been on a big strawberry and spinach salad kick lately.  Something about the tangy sweetness of the dressing is like a comfort food to me.  This is a spin off the classic strawberry salad with a dressing that is just as great (without a ton of poppy seeds to pick out your teeth).

Asian Mushroom Stir-Fry

Mushrooms 16 oz, $2.69
Carrots, $1.50
Eggs, $2/dozen

We eat asian at least once a week, and many times it is a Sunday night meal for just my husband and I.  We’ll put the kids in bed and eat a late dinner, but enjoy time just for us and always enjoy some of our favorite foods. This is a a meatless dish but is perfect with Publix having mushrooms on sale next week.

Tip: The recipe calls for mirin which is like Japanese Saki.  You probably won’t have it or find it in a store.  Just substitute with dry white wine or rice vinegar.

Greek Chicken Pitas

Greek Yogurt, 5.3-7 oz, $1
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast, $2.49 lb
Cooking Spray 5 oz, $2.49
Pita Bread, 12 oz, $1
Tomatoes, $1.29 lb
Cucumbers, 89¢ ea.

I think Pitas were invented for children.  If you’ve never tried Greek pitas with your kids, trust me on this.  They are not only delicious but also super easy for them eat.  Think about a sandwich that never falls apart… genius.
