Happy National Child Passenger Safety Week!
I know you probably didn’t bake a cake in celebration, and you also forgot to mark it on your calendar… this is an important week though that shouldn’t be forgotten.
The goal for child passenger safety is to make sure all parents and caregivers are correctly using the right restraint (rear-facing car seat, forward-facing car seat, belt-positioning booster seat or vehicle seat belt) for their children’s ages and sizes. Many areas across the U.S. will be hosting events where Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will provide education on how to use and install car seats, booster seats and seat belts for children.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 59 percent of car seats are misused or not properly installed. Odds are many of us fall into that statistic… I know you are thinking it’s just a short trip to the grocery store, or “they are just fine”. But the 5 minutes it would take to get it done properly are well worth it compared to the lifetime wishing you had…
We aren’t going to go into the painful numbers, but I have no doubt we all know someone that lost a little one in a car accident.
To stay on the happy side of things this week, I want you to make an effort to find and visit a car seat safety check this week. I’ll be at one in the Fort Mill SC area that Britax is hosting at their headquarters this Friday from 9 am to 11:30 am.
If you can’t find one near you, here are some tips to help you know your seats are properly installed and that you are using the right seat for the age/size of the child.
