A lot of us overlook updating our bedroom.  Let’s all make a pact to freshen up the your bedroom: keep our kid’s things out of our master bedroom and keep it a space for us.  This spring is a great time to remove all of the distractions and make it a space where we can rest and relax.

10 Tips to Freshen Up Your Bedroom

Remove the Clutter

Before you do anything to update your bedroom, remove all of the trinkets from table tops and start fresh.  Only keep the things that are extra special to you or serve a purpose.  If it’s a stack of magazines you’ve been trying to read for months, move them to the recycling bin.  You’re probably not going to read them at this point. If your kids have their things scattered throughout your room or in one corner, take that stuff out. Keep their things in their room so your room can be a getaway.

Deep Clean Everything

Mop, dust, clean the windows and mirrors, clean the sheets, your bedspread, throw the curtains in the wash.  Having everything in your room bright and clean helps a lot at making your room feel updated and you don’t even have to spend any money. I found a good checklist to deep clean the bedroom from Time Warp Wife.

Get a New Rug

If it isn’t in your budget to buy a new rug, shop your house and grab a rug from another room and switch it with the one from your bedroom.  Sometimes you can find inexpensive look alike rugs.

Switch Out Accent Pillows

If the throw pillows have been on your bed since the 90s, it’s time to update them.  You can even make a slipcover that simply goes over your old pillows.  Or find a cute, inexpensive set of pillows or make your own. Use the pillows to tie together the colors in your room or use them as a pop of color.

Frame Family Photos

We’re all guilty of leaving our family photos on the camera or on our phones. Print them out and put them in a nice frame. I love gallery walls—they’re perfect for displaying family photos.

Get a Scented Candle

Find a candle that you and your husband both like and light it every couple of days for a fresh scent in your room.

Change Out Your Bedding

I like to have a heavy quilt for the winter and a light quilt for summer.  Switch it out when the weather changes for a change of scenery and a more weather-appropriate bedding.  Hopefully it will keep your heating and air bills down while you’re at it!

New Lamps

Run to the thrift store, grab a lamp you like and switch it out with your old lamps.  If you don’t like the color or you have two unmatching lamps that you’d like to match, spray paint the base of them to add some uniformity.

House Plants

House plants are my suggestion for freshening up any room.  They help keep the air clean and the green adds some life to a room.  Did you know that some plants help you get a better night’s sleep?

Organize the Closet and Dresser

Your morning can start off on a bad note when you open the dresser drawer and everything is jumbled and overflowing from the drawers.  Grab some giveaway bags and go through everything to minimize the craziness.
