One of our DIY Christmas traditions is making ornaments for our tree. I’m pretty sure our tree is 80% handmade crafts if not more, but that’s part of what makes it so awesome. Martha Stewart won’t be putting it on the front of any magazines, but we’re happy.
With felt ornaments the skill level is very low so kids of all ages can help, and the cost is super cheap. Grab a felt variety pack rather than individual colors (your kids will always want a color you didn’t buy). Since the variety packs aren’t on sale normally, they make for a perfect thing to grab with the craft store 40% off coupons that come out.
Rather than giving you detailed directions how about some general felt tips and then pictures. Most of these are so easy just looking at the finished picture you’ll figure out how make it.
Felt Ornament Tips:
- Use objects around the house to help you make perfect circles.
- Use cookie cutters to make basic Christmas shapes.
- Cut out stencil shapes with paper and then pin them to the felt for more precise unique shapes.
- Any ornament looks great with a “back” attached, this can hide any mess ups or pen marks.
- Stick with washable non-toxic Tempera paints for handprint crafts. These are sold at any craft store.
The last tip is for mama’s in general… you have to be okay with the outcome. This is their craft and not your’s to fix when they aren’t looking.
