If you’ve been around Southern Savers for a while, then you know that I’m a huge supporter of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. Every year my family signs up for a CSA through Pinckney’s Produce and we love it!
If you aren’t familiar with the concept, this is a program where you basically pay for a share in the farm. Each week you then get a box of everything that is ripe and ready right then. Many weeks we end up with more produce than we can eat, so some weeks we put it away in the freezer for future meals! A recent example of our box included:
(1) Watermelon
(1 pint) Okra
(1) Eggplant
(5) Corn on the Cob
(5) Tomatoes
(4) Peppers
and a number of other things
If there is something you don’t like or want (like I’m allergic to Eggplant) each pick up location has a swap box. I can leave my eggplant and grab a second watermelon or whatever I want from the box to replace it.
Pinckney’s Produce is a South Carolina based CSA program provided by Rest Park Farm in Beufort, SC. They’re family owned and operated by a 5th generation produce farmer and his son. They offer 12-week harvest seasons in the Spring/Summer and the Fall with over 40 different varieties of locally grown, quality produce each season. They have 30+ drop sites across the midlands and Lowcountry of South Carolina – find out if they have a site near you. Pinckney’s Produce offers four different share size options and even a payment plan option to make the program as flexible as possible for your family’s needs.
Their Fall 2012 season is from September 1 – November 1, so you can go ahead and sign up!
For everyone not in the SC area, there is a great resource to help you find a CSA in your area. Enter your zipcode and see what’s available.
