Extreme Couponer 101: Getting Coupons

Posted on Jul 25 2008 | By Jenny · Comments

I currently have a coupon box that is so full it will not close.  I could also hold it upside down (while jumping) and nothing would fall out.  (I use a plastic index card file box that is 3 inches deep and fits the normal sized index cards.)   When I pull it out anywhere the first thing people say is “Where do you find all of these?”  Here is a detailed answer (not the one I’ll give you if ask quickly in a store).

  1. I get 2 Sunday papers each week (one is ours and the other is my mother’s whom I love).  If it is a great week, like 3 inserts, I will pick up a 3rd.  Check here for the weekly insert schedule.  Hint: In your Sunday paper always check your Parade Magazine for more coupons.
  2. I print coupons that I might need when I see them online rather than the week of using them- mostly because you never know when you will want it.  If it expires before you use it odds are it is either no longer offered online anyway or they have probably reset the limits so you can print it again anyway.
  3. I get All You magazine - a Walmart sponsored publication that is sold online or at Wal-mart.  It is filled with coupons every month that can be used anywhere.  Last month the coupons valued over $45.  It comes out monthly and if you get a subscription off the Internet it only costs $21.  Kind of pricey but it’s the same type of magazine as Redbook or Family and it comes with coupons (and one month can pay for it’s self…  Get a 2 month trial here. (Click bill me later to really make it a Free trial).
  4. As I walk through the grocery store any coupons I see in the dispensers around the stores or on a display (not coupons on items) I grab.  I have an empty baggy with me or I just drop them in my purse to organize later.  I can come home with more coupons than I used this way.  Rarely will you use them that day, it is much better to wait for a good sale to match them with.
  5. As you enter most stores look for coupon books (esp. Publix).  Most coupons in them are Manufacturers that can be used anywhere — even if they say “Redeem at Publix”.  If the words Manufacturer’s Coupon and a bar code are on them they are fair game for any store.
  6. This one I have not done but it is a great way to get more inserts… A friend of mine has been able to get numerous Sunday inserts for free using freecycle.  Click here to see if there is one in your city and to register.  This is a first come first serve type of deal so you have to keep an eye out and email quick when you see something you want!!
  7. Sign up online for free samples of products and they usually come with a coupon or two as well.  All this takes is your time of filling in your address and then it makes checking the mail a lot like Christmas.  We got free brownies, splenda, oatmeal and deodorant all in the same week!!
  8. Lastly if there is a coupon for a product that we LOVE and it is a good coupon (i.e. 50 cents or $1) I will sometimes order extras of it through The Coupon Clippers.  My recent coupon stock ups were for Lawry’s Marinades (always free with a coupon if you wait for sales), Juicy Juice, Orange Juice, and Daisy Sour Cream (another always free item).

Do you have a coupon source I didn’t mention please share, even if they won’t fit in my box we can always use more!!

This doesn’t have to do with coupons, but with sale items. If only “select varieties” are on sale, always ask. I received a free bag of chips at Publix because it was improperly marked (only potato chips not tortilla chips were on sale). Also, when cream soups go on sale (for example 58 cents at Kroger this week), they often do not put the fat free ones on sale. I asked, and the cashier gave them to me for the sale price. I just said, “So healthy people have to pay more for the exact same thing?” It worked. :)
